You don’t need special kit to start weighted walking, but a few smart choices make a big difference to comfort. A vest or backpack adds warmth, pressure and a little friction in places a normal walk doesn’t. Here’s what to wear, from your feet up, so the only thing you notice is how good the walk feels.

Shoes and socks

Your feet carry everything, including the extra weight, so this is the one place worth getting right. Choose supportive, cushioned walking or running shoes with a firm heel and plenty of room for your toes. Save minimalist trainers, worn-out pairs and fashion sneakers for another day.

Pair them with moisture-wicking socks rather than cotton. Cotton holds sweat, and damp skin rubs more easily, which is how blisters start on longer walks.

Leggings, shorts or trousers

Anything you’d happily walk in works. Many women prefer leggings or longer shorts because they stop the inner thighs rubbing. A high, wide waistband is comfortable under a vest. If you wear a rucking backpack with a hip belt, avoid thick seams or chunky drawstrings right where the belt sits.

Pockets are a bonus: a phone pocket in your leggings frees up your hands and keeps the vest’s front pocket for keys or a snack.

A supportive sports bra

A weighted vest sits over your chest, so the bra underneath matters more than usual. A smooth, supportive sports bra keeps everything comfortable and stops the vest’s edges pressing on underwire or clasps. Racerback styles often sit more comfortably under vest straps than thin, adjustable straps that can dig in.

The layer under your vest

Always wear a top under a vest or backpack, even on warm days. It protects your skin from rubbing at the neck, armpits and waist. The best choice is a fitted, breathable, moisture-wicking T-shirt or long-sleeve top. Loose tops bunch up under the straps, and cotton stays wet and cold once you stop.

Tip: if a vest rubs in one spot, a top with flat seams usually fixes it. If it still rubs, the vest probably doesn’t fit quite right. Our fit guide explains what to adjust.

Dressing for the weather

Carrying weight warms you up quickly, and a vest also traps heat around your chest. A simple rule: wear one layer less than you would for a normal walk.

  • Warm days: a light, breathable top, a hat or cap and sunglasses. Walk early or late, and bring more water than usual.
  • Cool days: a thin base layer under the vest and a light jacket over the top that you can unzip. You’ll warm up within ten minutes.
  • Cold days: gloves and a hat first, because they’re easy to take off. Keep the layers under your vest thin so it still fits snugly.
  • Rain: a waterproof jacket can go over a vest. Check whether your vest’s weights can get wet before you go.

Small extras that help

  • Bright or reflective clothing if you walk early, late or in winter. Many vests have reflective strips, but they don’t help if a jacket covers them.
  • Water for walks longer than 30 minutes, or any warm day.
  • Anti-chafe balm for spots that tend to rub, such as under the arms or along a bra band.
  • Your phone, both for safety and to track how your walks are building up.

The simple version

  • Supportive, cushioned shoes and moisture-wicking socks.
  • A supportive sports bra and a fitted, breathable top under your vest.
  • One layer less than a normal walk.
  • Something bright if it’s dark, and water if it’s warm.
